The decrease in blood pH is detected by chemoreceptors that then increase stimulation of the respiratory center in the brain. The respiratory center increases stimulation of the respiratory muscles, thus increasing both ventilation and gas exchange. Increased carbon dioxide exchange leads to decreased quantities of carbon dioxide in the blood, and thus increases the blood pH, bringing pH levels back to the normal range.
